Example Guides and Agreements
The Graduate School has compiled example guides and work agreements to help supervisors develop their own agreements.
Many graduate students are employed as Teaching Assistants (TAs), Assistant Instructors (AIs) and/or Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) during their graduate studies.
While the university’s office of Human Resources provides guidelines to supervisors, many faculty and students are unaware of these resources. Some graduate programs, departments, colleges and schools have their own guidelines, checklists and agreements that students and/or faculty review and sign, but this practice is not universal.
Managing Student Employees
The university’s office of Human Resources provides guidelines to supervisors for managing student employees.
Graduate Education Task Force
The Graduate Education Task Force report recommended that all graduate programs have graduate student employee-supervisor agreements signed by both the student and the supervising faculty member with copies retained by the program.
Docusign
Docusign is an excellent method for making agreements available to the students and faculty, obtaining signatures and facilitating record keeping.
This website serves as a resource for developing these agreements and outlines best practices. Programs may wish to create one document for each employment category that serves as the agreement or a suite of documents and guides.
The agreements should be completed before the start of each semester for teaching assignments and at least annually for research assignments.
